Roy Sims began his Fire Service career in 1981 as a volunteer firefighter in the small town of Mammoth Spring, Arkansas. He served there for several years then relocated just across the state line to Thayer, Missouri. He was asked to join the department there as a Captain and was soon promoted to the rank of Assistant Fire Chief. Roy was a building contractor and was working at that time in West Plains, Mo, where he moved in 1998. He joined the fire department as a volunteer and was hired fulltime June 16, 1999. In November, 2001 he was promoted to Assistant Fire Chief serving in that capacity now under Fire Chief Tim Bean. His early influence in the fire service was his Father Roy T, who served as a Chief Officer in southeast Missouri as Roy D was growing up. He loved hearing his Dad talk about those early days of fire fighting. Roy has obtained numerous certifications through Missouri University Fire & Rescue Training Institute, Missouri Division of Fire Safety, and the National Fire Academy. He is an Adjunct Instructor with MU/FRTI with certification as Fire Service Instructor II. He also teaches at MSU-West Plains in the Fire Science Degree Program. Sims holds membership in numerous organizations; Fire Fighters Association of Missouri (Coordinator of Region G) Missouri Statewide Mutual-Aid (Assistant Coordinator of Region G) Howell County Fire Chiefs Association Missouri Fire Chiefs Association Homeland Security Response Team (HSRT) Coordinator Oversight Committee of Homeland Security Regional Response System (HSRRS) Professional Fire and Fraud Investigators Association (PFFIA) International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) West Plains Optimist Club Roy is married to Michelle who is a Registered Nurse with the Veterans Administration at West Plains
